  1. I recently purchased the Sony DCR SX63 after looking at several camcorders in the same price range. I was impressed with the Sony SX63′s low-light capabilities and especially the touch screen. My only concern was the compatibility with my Mac.

Prior to purchasing the camcorder I contacted Sony support online to confirm their product would work with my Macintosh operating system. They told me I would need to upgrade to iMovie 09 or if I didn’t want to do that, I could use Quicktime. I felt assured that given this was a new product on the market, I shouldn’t have too big of issues. Not the case. Since I do not have iMovie 09 and would need to buy it I was hoping to use Quicktime to connect. Quicktime did not work – Sony told me to contact Apple for the Quicktime upgrade. After contacting Apple, I was informed I would need to purchase Voltaic intead- and that was not their product so really they couldn’t help me. At this point I contacted Voltaic. To which they informed me their product worked primarily with HD camcorders, and mine was not HD? Sooo, after a day of online support with both companies and additional software companies…. I have not been able to connect the camera and download any video. (note- all the pictures I took from the camcorder download fine – and while they are not the best quality, atleast the photos will download.) At this point neither Sony nor Apple support can help me with connecting/converting/accessing my video from the camcorder. Both companies are telling me different programs. All of which require purchasing an additional program, but neither agree on what the other one is telling me to buy or that it will definately work. Hoping to get an answer soon….or the camera will, unfortunately….be going back. At this point, this is not a good purchase for Mac users.

  2. If you are like me, and don’t want to haul both a camera and a camcorder to events and on vacations, this IS NOT the camcorder for you. It takes really bad grainy photos. I should have done more homework. The HD camcorders can take 3 MP photos. This SD camcorder takes photos around 640k! :(

The other issue is the size. It’s just too small. I can’t imagine this being natural to use for anyone with decent sized hands. The menu is akward to use and the buttons are cumbersome.

On the plus side, the video is good. Very clear and no problems with low light conditions.

If you have small hands, and don’t care about being able to take photos with your camcorder, then go for it. Otherwise, I recommend against it.
